Tytus Howard’s Rocky Road with the Texans: Time to Rethink the Investment?

Tytus Howard’s tenure with the Houston Texans continues to raise questions about his role as a foundational piece of the offensive line. Despite securing a lucrative three-year, $56 million contract extension in 2023, Howard’s performance has yet to justify the investment. His 2024 season has been marred by inconsistency and inefficiency in both pass protection and run blocking.

Pass Protection: Howard has allowed more pressures and sacks than any previous season. With 21 pressures, 15 hurries, and 6 sacks surrendered already in 2024, he is on track for career-highs in all categories.

Run Blocking Woes: Historically, Howard has struggled with run blocking, and this season is no different. His lack of physicality and inability to finish blocks are critical liabilities in the Texans’ ground game.

Leadership Concerns: Questions around Howard’s accountability and leadership surfaced after high-profile lapses, including miscommunications that led to key mistakes against teams like the Lions.

The Future for Howard and the Texans

Howard’s deal includes significant guaranteed money through 2025, making it difficult to part ways with him immediately. However, the Texans’ recent investment in rookie lineman Blake Fisher signals a potential shift in strategy. If Howard’s performance does not improve, the front office might explore trading or releasing him post-June 1, 2025, to mitigate cap hits. Drafting Blake Fisher in the second round suggests they may be preparing for a future without relying heavily on Howard. Ultimately, the Texans will need to evaluate whether Howard's presence on the line is hindering the team's offensive potential and consider alternative options for strengthening their offensive line.

In the short term, Houston’s offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik faces the challenge of scheming around Howard’s weaknesses. While some blame has fallen on play-calling, the reality is that no scheme can fully compensate for a lineman consistently losing individual battles.

Howard’s next steps will be critical—not just for his career, but for a Texans offense looking to support emerging stars like C.J. Stroud. The spotlight is on, and time is running out to change the narrative.

Great article. I’m surprised his poor play hasn’t been mentioned more often.
