Should the Texans Trade for Cooper Kupp or Re-Sign Stefon Diggs?
Cooper Kupp’s reputation as one of the toughest and smartest receivers in the NFL is unquestioned. As one of the league’s few triple crown winners, his resume speaks for itself. With Kupp recently hinting at the possibility of being traded from the Rams, it raises an important question: Should the Texans make a move for him or re-sign Stefon Diggs?
Both players would require multi-year deals at a similar price point, and both have dealt with injuries—though Diggs’ was season-ending. Each brings a unique skill set, but is either truly the right move for the Texans?
The Case for Cooper Kupp
Kupp, Diggs, or Neither? How the Texans Should Build Their WR Room
Kupp already has familiarity with new offensive coordinator Nick Caley’s system and has mastered the intricate role of a slot receiver in it. This scheme requires receivers to block from tight alignments, execute insert blocks between linemen to seal off linebackers, and still be highly productive in the passing game. Kupp’s knowledge could be invaluable for young receivers and coaches alike.
However, the cost of acquiring him—both in terms of contract and potential draft capital—raises concerns. With his recent injury history and slight decline in production, is it wise to invest heavily in him at this stage of his career?
The Case for Stefon Diggs
Diggs was top six in receptions before tearing his ACL, proving he can still be a high-level contributor. He played more snaps from the slot than ever before, but his struggles with blocking from tight alignments raise concerns. In Caley’s scheme—where wide receivers and tight ends must serve as motion and lead blockers—his fit is questionable.
Bringing Diggs back on a reasonable contract makes sense only if Caley can scheme around his limitations as a blocker. Otherwise, his presence puts more pressure on the third receiver and tight ends to handle those responsibilities. And at this point in his career, is Diggs still explosive enough to justify such an adjustment?
The Best Path Forward
With Tank Dell recovering from injury and underwhelming performances from John Metchie and Xavier Hutchinson, the Texans must improve their receiving corps. However, tying up major cap space in an aging veteran with injury concerns isn't the smartest move.
Instead, the Texans should look to the draft. Caserio has a solid track record of drafting receivers, and this class offers plenty of talent beyond the first round. Names like Jayden Higgins, Jalen Royals, Jaylin Noel, Jack Bech, Xavier Restrepo, and Tre Harris all present intriguing fits in this offense.
Additionally, Houston can supplement the group with cheaper veteran depth options like Noah Brown, Olamide Zaccheaus, Mack Hollins, Nick Westbrook, Tim Patrick, and Ben Skowronek—guys who can contribute without breaking the bank.
Conclusion: Build Through the Draft
The best approach isn’t chasing expensive, aging veterans—it’s investing in young, explosive playmakers who can develop alongside C.J. Stroud. The Packers have thrived using this model, and even the Rams appear to be moving on from Kupp in favor of Puka Nacua and other young talent.
There’s no reason the Texans can’t do the same. Finding a Robin to Nico Collins’ Batman is absolutely possible in this draft, and that’s the smartest way to build a sustainable, dynamic receiving corps for years to come.
